Artist Biography:
I paint because quite simply I can’t imagine not painting. My aim is not to paint pictures that will sell; I paint what I love. I am particularly moved by the breathtaking local scenery, the ever-changing moods therein and the beauty of flowers, their scent, depth and vivid colours.
Each piece evolves as I paint: I may begin with a fixed idea but rarely reach the expected conclusion. The often quite surreal scenery of the North East of Scotland looks too improbable when directly reproduced and I often have to tone down a painting to make it seem ‘more real‘. I am influenced mainly by colour: rich dramatic purples, sunny evocative oranges and moody bruised blues. My aim is to take the viewer to a bright and happy place and to provoke the occasional smile.
My painting styles and media vary with time. Currently I am using mainly Acrylic paint on board canvases, sometimes adding texture using various techniques.
