Alan Lees
Artist Biography:
For more than twenty years now, I have worked as a successful sculptor here in Scotland, mainly in wood, although latterly I have begun to explore the possibilities of making willow sculptures – drawing in the sky. As one of Scotland’s foremost woodcarvers, my work has explored many themes: religious, wildlife, Celtic, maritime and historical subjects, using all kinds of native hardwoods such as lime and Scottish oak. Sketching is always part of the sculptural process, but over the past few years I have found myself spending more and more of my time painting.
I suspect it is partly because of my sculptural background that I have been prompted to free myself to explore figures in a colourful landscape – vivid colour fascinates me, as do figures moving and interacting within bright West of Scotland beach and seascapes, or Scottish city parks in all seasons. I feel that I will never reach the end of inspiration for these. The potential for a kind of storytelling within the picture – what has happened before, what might occur after - also interests me enormously, again perhaps because wood sculpture is so very different – there is movement and tension within each carving but the ‘story’ of the piece itself is very different.

Artist News/Exhibitions:
My work can currently be seen at the new Beresford Gallery, Beresford Terrace, Ayr and at the Kirkton Inn, Dalrymple. My mini prints are available throughout Ayrshire. Full sets of Tam O' Shanter miniprints are available.
