Forest Monarchs

Title: Forest Monarchs
Description: Forest Monarchs is large contemporary oil painting of a deer stag and a doe against an abstract autumn forest background. It is painted in thick luxurious paint in warm autumn colours. The deer stand in the centre of the canvas with light behind them and trees in the foreground which they are merging with – as deer seem to do in real life. They are fallow deer which you see often in English countryside. This painting was inspired by the deer at Knole Park in Sevenoaks when I was there last October. There is a long shallow valley which runs down the middle of the park which has families of deer in the trees either side that bellow and parade around at that time of year. No matter how many deer I see, I am still captivated by them and have tried to show the magical nature of them. The painting style is messy art nouveau and because it is painted in thick paint, has facets to it that reflect slightly different colours at different times of day. The size is 40x40x1.5 inches, white edged, deep edge canvas, ready to hang and no frame needed.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
