Woodland Portal

Title: Woodland Portal
Description: Woodland Portal is 40x40x1.5 inches oil on canvas square painting of a woodland glade with wild flowers and blue tits set against light through the trees. It is semi abstract in style and the paint is thickly applied and in very vibrant colours. It was inspired by the happiness I feel at springtime in Sussex and particularly the feeling you get in a wood when you are just about to leave it and find some new and interesting landscapes. The blue tits are there because you often see them in English woodland and forests and they are very pretty little birds. I called it woodland portal as when I enter a path into a woodland or forest I sometimes wonder if I will come out somewhere else entirely elsewhere to the area I went in. I always loved the idea of doors into other realms and universes and this is a common source of inspiration for me. This painting leads you to where you want to go and the birds are the ones who know how to get there. Painted on deep edge canvas, ready to hang, no frame needed.

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
