Realm of the Ravens

Title: Realm of the Ravens
Description: Realm of the Ravens is a 40x40x1.5 inches large oil painting of a flock of ravens in flight against a golden sunset behind winter trees. The background is blurred, semi abstract and slightly magical, whilst the ravens are carefully painted in the foreground to give a feeling of depth. The ravens flap and caw as ravens do and although they have a woodland behind them, they are also moving into another realm through the hint of veils which they pass through. One of the ravens is white and the rest reflect the colours that you can see in black ravens of blues, greens and deep violets. Ravens fascinate me as they follow you and report to each other when you are in their territory. A collection of ravens is apparently called a ‘conspiracy’ which seems apt sometimes especially as they seem to laugh at the antics of mammals and humans. The inspiration for this painting is the winter woodland I see around Sussex and the ravens themselves who definitely know something I don’t about the landscapes I walk in. The painting has white edges, is ready to hang, no frame needed

Artist Biography:

I am a Sussex based artist who paints large original landscape paintings and seascape paintings in oil on canvas.

My art is painted mostly from memory after having visited somewhere beautiful and are an attempt to capture some of the essence of that place.

I gained a fine art degree from Brighton in 1983 and began my painting career as a portraitist and muralist. However, sometime in the late 90s, after painting my 200th labrador, I realised I was crushingly bored and needed to develop my own painting style and began to paint landscapes and seascapes for my own amusement.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of nature and animals and eventually developed a painting style that combines traditional painting techniques with more abstract and contemporary techniques.

My artworks evolve from simple ideas, usually after I have taken a walk somewhere. They are expressionistic, impressionist, art deco, art nouveau and something possibly unique to me in the feeling they evoke.

I like to think that paintings have little souls woven into them by artists and that these are what call to a viewer (or not as the case may be) and give a painting presence and desirability.

My goal is to one day paint a place so beautiful I will disappear into it and never be seen again and to create worlds where others can do the same even if only for a little while.
