Great Horned Owl

Title: Great Horned Owl
Description: A great horned owl peers from amongst the white oak foliage - perhaps getting ready to settle down to rest after a night's hunting. My thanks to Jennie Norris for the reference photograph of the owl. Widely distributed in the Americas, the Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is also known as the tiger owl or hoot owl. It is the second heaviest owl in North America, after the snowy owl, and its well-camouflaged plumage varies considerably across its range. The large, powerful talons are capable of exerting 300 pounds of pressure per square inch. Those tufts of feathers that give rise to the species' name are thought to be used to give visual cues when interacting with other owls. This original pencil drawing by Elaine Jones was made with Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran d'Ache Pablo and Luminance pencils on Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper. Image measures approximately 37cm x 29cm, unframed.

Artist Biography:

I am a UK-based artist whose art hangs in homes from the west coast to the east coast of the USA and from the north to the south of the UK. I am so excited to know that my paintings and drawings are bringing pleasure to others after I have enjoyed creating them!

Childhood tales of my grandfather's adventures as a flight mechanic for pioneering aviator Sir Alan Cobham, and my father's involvement with the Fairey Delta project, aircraft naturally became a subject I just had to paint, and led me to join the Guild of Aviation Artists.

Other favourite subjects are wildlife, scenes from the age of sail, and western scenes inspired by holidays spent on ranches in Arizona, Wyoming and Texas and touring the western states of the USA.

My work has been on display at galleries in Lichfield and Walsall.
