Ian (William John) Greenwood
Artist Biography:
GREENWOOD

W. J Greenwood (Ian) was born in Newry Co Down in 1946, living the early part of his life on a farm outside the small village of Rathfriland, later moving to Belfast.
He has travelled very extensively throughout the world and is an Australian citizen having lived in Sydney for some time.

He has also spent, quite a considerable amount of his life in and around the Mediterranean area, particularity Southern Spain.

This influence can be seen quite clearly in his work by the use of bold vivid colours, suffering as he does from (S.A.D) Seasonal Affective Disorder (lack of sunshine) he finds that when he surrounds himself with such vivid colour it affects the mind and spirit.

Another great influence which can be seen in his work,is the twelve years he spent in the show-business world, having been involved in the International Club business, he has many stories relating to famous stage artists like P J Proby, Solomon King of “She wears my Ring fame”, and Freddie, of Freddie and the Dreamers to name but a few.

In the mid-1980s he had a series of life - changing experiences. Withdrawing completely from public life he enrolled in a Belfast Bible College; where he studied theology, before moving on to study the origins of Christianity, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the development of organized religion under some very eminent scholars.

This study prompted great concern within, as, to what was fact, what was taught to be fact and what was assumed to be fact and resulted in an even greater need, to understand just how words were used, misused and abused.

He subsequently enrolled at the Belfast Institute of Further & Higher Education in Belfast where he trained as a journalist. To-day he spends a lot of time painting and writing.

One of his favourite subjects is the theory of Synchronicity ... (the state or fact of being synchronous or simultaneous; synchronism. Coincidence of events that seem to be meaningfully related, conceived in Jungian theory as an explanatory principle on the same order as causality)

Professionally trained he cites the famous Dutch painter / Sculpture Jits Bakker who he met and became friends with in Southern Spain, as the greatest influence on his life in relation to art.

Bakker’s art and sculptures decorate many cities in the Netherlands but also far beyond Holland to name a few, Mexico, Portugal, America and Germany.

His exhibitions have graced the Laren Singer Museum. The National Museum of fine Arts in La Valetta Malta among many others.

Greenwood is considered to be bordering on the eccentric, a very studious and contemplative man who rarely leaves his studio.

“All the Worlds a Stage and Everyone a Player” he says he has played many roles in life

His paintings are in Private and Government collections in Ireland, also much further a-field in Australia, England, Zimbabwe, and China.
