Title: Gannets, Cliffs of Noss. Shetland

Description: I've just returned from a splendid time in Shetland, where I managed to do 3 oil sketches en plein air to add to the 3 I brought back last year. I could do a "Shetland only" show on this page soon. This painting was done back at home in 2009 and was put together following the fantastic "Seals & Seabirds" boat trip around Bressay and Noss which starts from the quayside in Lerwick. It was exhibited at Theatre by the Lake last Christmas, & appeared on ABA briefly, since when I have painted in 3 more gannets on the left hand rocks. You might say "Now with extra gannets" !

Title: 7th of August 1829 - Mendelssohn's Party Lands on Staffa

Description: My love of music and Britain’s natural wonders inspired me to attempt to depict the moment at which "The Hebrides" overture was born. The composer and his travelling companion Klingemann enter Fingal's Cave while men from the steamer control the boat in the Atlantic swell. Klingmann wrote:
"We were put out into boats and lifted by the hissing sea up the pillar stumps to the celebrated Fingal's Cave. A greener roar of waves surely never rushed into a stranger cavern - its many pillars making it look like the inside of an immense organ, black and resounding, and absolutely without purpose, and quite alone, the wide grey sea within and without."
